[…] Riemen invita a elevarnos por encima de la ideología, de la política que divide, que defiende firmemente a través de abstracciones lo uno o lo otro, para, en su lugar, adentrarnos en el mundo del espíritu que plantea dudas, que cuestiona, que erige el discernimiento y la sensibilidad y, sobre todo, que valora el respeto al ser humano concreto en su esfuerzo hacia la verdad y la libertad. Los obstáculos son múltiples. Muchas veces es el amor al poder el que empuja a perder la integridad intelectual y la independencia de pensamiento. Otras veces, es la absolutización del paradigma de las ciencias naturales la que conduce a arrumbar los valores que guían la vida humana hacia la plenitud, ignorando que, para interpretar la realidad, para desvelar el significado de los hechos y de los datos, se requiere de unos valores que sirvan de guía. Vivir auténticamente, tener compasión, crear belleza y ser justos no es algo a lo que las ciencias naturales puedan enseñarnos por sí solas, necesitamos la aportación que los conocimientos humanísticos garantizan.

[…] Riemen invites us to rise above ideology, above the divisive politics that staunchly defends one side or the other through abstractions, and instead delve into the world of the spirit, which raises doubts, questions, cultivates discernment and sensitivity, and, above all, values ​​respect for the individual human being in their pursuit of truth and freedom. The obstacles are many. Often, it is the love of power that leads to the loss of intellectual integrity and independence of thought. At other times, it is the absolutization of the natural science paradigm that leads to the abandonment of the values ​​that guide human life toward fulfillment, ignoring that interpreting reality, unveiling the meaning of facts and data, requires guiding values. Living authentically, having compassion, creating beauty, and being just are not things that the natural sciences can teach us on their own; we need the contribution that the humanities provide.
