Un Mann, per cert, que als anys quaranta ja va advertir els americans que si un dia el feixisme arribava als Estats Units seria en nom de la llibertat. Ara hi ha Trump… En tot cas, Riemen assegura que cal actuar de seguida per evitar que la cultura moderna i mediocre imperant d’avui dia —la de la mort, la que està obsedida per les xarxes socials, el progrés tecnològic i el creixement econòmic, la de l’individu conformista i còmode amb uns poders que pensen per ell i promulguen únicament l’utilitarisme— ho arrasi tot.

For the Dutch philosopher, action must be taken urgently: we must return to the European humanism that stretched from Socrates to Thomas Mann. Mann, incidentally, warned Americans as early as the 1940s that if fascism ever came to the United States, it would come in the name of freedom. Now they have Trump… In any case, Riemen insists that we must act without delay to prevent today’s modern, mediocre culture – the culture of death, obsessed with social media, technological progress and economic growth; the culture of the conformist individual, content to let others think on his behalf and guided only by utilitarianism – from sweeping everything away.
